James also fought in the Boer War. Attestation paper states he was a miner. When he enlisted he was 6ft tall and weighed 200lbs. James was admitted to hospital on 29/04/1917 and was discharged 11/09/1917 spending a total 135 days in hospital. Shell wound to the left arm was severe. James was later admitted to the Military Hospital Hollywood on 17/09/1917 to 29/10/1917. James then went to the UVF hospital 29/10/1917 and was discharged on the 19/11/1917. James then returned to the Military Hospital Hollywood on 19/11/1917 to 04/02/1918 then returned to the UVF hospital 04/02/1918 until 05/03/1918. Medical board discharged James as permanently unfit in June 1918. James ended up with tuberculosis caused by the war. He formerly served with the Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry
